Course Description
This online comprehensive spine course provides guidelines for selecting safe fitness exercises for people with scoliosis and structural spinal conditions. Theoretical content examines the pathogenesis of scoliosis, hyper-kyphosis, osteoporosis, disc, and other structural spine pathologies. Practical assessment tools are demonstrated with the help of adult volunteers with structural scoliosis and kyphosis. Mat Pilates Exercises are then adapted based on the assessment. The goal of this course is to provide the health care professional and Pilates/Fitness instructor the information necessary to collaborate for the benefit of the client with scoliosis and spinal conditions,
Objectives: at the end of this course the student will:
- Understand pathogenesis/pathomechanism theories of scoliosis and other structural spine pathologies
- Understand basic history, theory and research behind PSSE and the Schroth Method, a practice limited in scope of practice to physical therapists
- Understand basic scoliosis curve types and clinical presentation of hyper-lyphosis, Osteoporosis and other spinal conditions
- Demonstrate the skills to provide an overall assessment of the Pilates client with scoliosis and spinal conditions to determine best exercise selection
- Improve breathing strategies for the client with scoliosis and hyper-kyphosis
- Createmodifications to Pilates Mat exercises for the client with scoliosis and other spinal conditions to support safe movement choices
- Understand how Mat modifications can transfer to Pilates apparatus exercises
- Understand scope of practice and how the physical therapist and Pilates instructor can collaborate for the benefit of the adult client with scoliosis and other spine conditions
